HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) - There is a call out to remove barriers from those trying to re-enter society after serving time behind bars.

The ACLU of Connecticut's Smart Justice Project says too many looking to turn their lives around are turned away because of their past. New Haven State Rep. Robyn Porter says she has seen this discrimination in her own son's experience. He was released from prison three years ago.

"They've done what they needed to do, to pay the debt to society. And then they come home, and we say we're giving them a second chance? I'm here to tell you many of these people haven't had a first chance."

Porter would like to see consideration of a measure banning such discrimination, and creating transparency in the work prosecutors do.
