(WTIC-AM) -- Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford has re-opened.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesperson Chris Collibee says the park had been closed since a string of tornadoes ripped through the state in May.

"The safety issue had to do with trees and branches that were down," Collibee said. "It was very unsafe for people to be going through there.  It was a tumbled mess of trees and branches throughout the park."

A spring fishing derby at the park is expected to go forward, and swimming in the summer is not expected to be impacted.

Another park damaged by the same storm, Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, is expected to re-open some time in the Spring.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent to remove damaged trees, and fix up two the parks.
