NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man who killed his estranged wife then fled with with their 2-year-old daughter was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years in prison.

Patrick Miles, 39, of New Britain, was convicted in October of murder and other charges in the shooting death of Yasheeka Miles in April 2017.

The 33-year-old victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head after police got a call from a person who said it sounded as though someone was being thrown around her apartment.

Patrick Miles had already left the scene with the girl prompting an Amber Alert. He left the child with relatives in New York and fled alone. Authorities caught up with him about a week later in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

The defendant was upset with his wife's relationship with another woman, authorities said.

Miles was sentenced after the victim's sister, Kokumo Lauray, said the family hopes he “rots in jail” in a victim impact statement read in court.

Miles' attorney, Anthony Spinella, said he would appeal based in part on an issue with the way the prosecutor asked him questions and because blood from the crime scene wasn't tested.

“He’s disappointed with not only the sentence, but the verdict,” Spinella said.
