LISBON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut woman whose husband died of a heart attack last year is suing a hospital for failing to recognize and treat his condition.

Jean Mares, of Lisbon, has filed a wrongful death suit blaming William W. Backus Hospital, its parent company, and several staff who treated Charles Mares for pneumonia in the time leading up to his last visit in February 2018.

Jean Mares says her 65-year-old husband was in the Norwich hospital's emergency room for nine hours with undiagnosed congestive heart failure before he died.

The Norwich Bulletin reports that the complaint alleges nine different entities are responsible for failing to tend to the symptoms of the chronic, progressive and deadly heart condition.

Hartford HealthCare spokesman Shawn Mawhiney says he cannot comment on pending litigation.
