NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A former New Haven employee has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $100,000 from the Connecticut city.

Daniel Lion, of Hamden, pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge Wednesday.

Court documents say New Haven employed the 64-year-old Lion for about 40 years, most recently as a payroll department analyst.

Federal prosecutors say he used the city's accounting software to issue extra paychecks over about 16 years.

Lion would cut himself vacation paychecks and then delete those entries, causing the system to also issue his regular paycheck.

Lion was on sick leave for months after a heart attack and heart surgery last year.

He retired in March before the city was to a hold a hearing prior to firing him.

He faces up to 21 months in prison.
