KENSINGTON, Conn. (WTIC) - Temperatures around zero have experts advising homeowners to take precautions to prevent burst pipes in the home.

The frigid weather can do serious damage to home plumbing. Pipes are susceptible to freezing and bursting, which can be an expensive repair job.

Scott Riley with Riley Plumbing and Heating says keeping the home properly heated helps, and reminds homeowners to never use heating elements to warm frozen pipes.

"We've seen some pretty scary situations where people have used blow dryers in the wrong spot, or electric heaters, and you just want to think about fire prevention and precaution and safety."

Riley says making sure drafty areas are blocked up can help, as does opening cabinets to let warm air from the house get into the pipes to prevent freeze ups.
