MANCHESTER, Conn. (WTIC) - First responders and military veterans battling mental health and addiction issues often have special needs when it comes to treatment, and the Honor Wellness Center, poised to open in Manchester, seeks to meet this need.

The Center is an intensive outpatient treatment program to serve the mental health, addiction, and trauma service needs for first responders and military veterans. Executive Director Phyllis DeGioia says this will be the first outpatient facility of its kind in Connecticut.

Prsently, the center is in the process of getting licensed with the Department of Public Health. After that they will move on to gaining credentialling toward acceptance of commercial insurance, as well as military Tricare insurance.

DeGioia describes the population the program intends to treat as mission-focused. "Within that mission, at times, they can be a little more guarded in how they discuss information and to whom and how," she explained. "So we make sure that a network which will be working with them specializes with the culture."

DeGioia says the stresses of being a first responder can result in health issues like anxiety, chronic pain, and depression. Proper mental health treatments can help, and DeGioia has already been seeing clients for individual and group sessions.
