HARTFORD, Conn (WTIC) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy said he is not surprised that Donald Trump is backing down on his administration's family separation policy, and shared some harsh words for the President.

The Governor called President Trump a "child abuser" for the controversial practice, and said "It is disgusting, it's un-American... it's not often that I have to say I'm ashamed of being an American, but this policy moves me to to say, on this particular front, we got it wrong."

Despite the executive order Trump signed Wednesday ending the practice, Malloy expressed doubt about whether it will truly stop, saying "I'll believe it when I see it."

Malloy said the next step is to immediately reunite the separated children with their parents. At least two of the children were being sent to Connecticut by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
