FARMINGTON, Conn. (WTIC) – It’s official, Jim Calhoun has been named the full-time Head Coach for the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) men’s basketball team. The announcement and contract signing were made in the lobby of the O’Connell Athletic Center on USJ’s West Hartford campus.

Calhoun, a three-time NCAA National Champion Coach and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee, will be the first-ever head coach of the men’s team. USJ is a participant in NCAA Division III athletics.

“Whether it’s Division I or Division III, the kids are the kids and the game is the game and I’m looking forward to getting back out on the court and teaching these young men each and every day,” said Calhoun. “I really missed being a part of a team, and we’re preparing for a great first season at USJ.”

University President Rhona Free, Ph.D., and Athletic Director Bill Cardarelli joined Calhoun for the announcement.

“From the first day we started working with Coach, it’s been momentous for all of us – especially our current student-athletes,” said Free. “In terms of recruiting all students, not just student-athletes, he has had what we call the ‘Calhoun Effect’ and we all enjoyed his talk where he emphasized that for all students, academics are the top priority.”

Calhoun brings to the court 873 career victories, including 625 while coaching at the University of Connecticut for 26 seasons, beginning in 1987 and ending in 2012.

Working alongside Calhoun to get the Blue Jays ready for their inaugural season will be Assistant Coach Glen Miller.

The opening game of the season will be held at the Oosting Gymnasium on the campus of Trinity College in Hartford against William Paterson University on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

USJ became a coeducational institution this year when the university began admitting male students to full-time undergraduate programs for the fall 2018 semester.

Coach Calhoun will be on WTIC NewsTalk 1080 Wednesday morning at 8:50am with Ray Dunaway and Joe D'Ambrosio.
