NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — The mayor of New Britain, Connecticut is asking for an investigation into a city police officer seen on a citizen's video appearing to punch a suspect.

Mayor Erin Stewart in a statement to the New Britain Herald on Tuesday said she's in discussion with the police chief and "will be sure an internal investigation is done."

The video was taken Friday by a neighborhood activist and appears to show Officer Michael Slavin striking a suspect on the ground who had attempted to flee on a bicycle.

Chief Chris Chute says the suspect was causing a traffic hazard and allegedly tried to destroy a crack pipe. He faces several charges.

Slavin remains on duty.

Slavin was one of five officers involved in a fatal 2017 shooting during an attempted traffic stop. All were cleared of wrongdoing.
