(Torillo, TX/WTIC Radio) - A bipartisan group of the nation's mayors, including Bridgeport's Joe Ganim, traveled to Torillo, Texas today along the U.S.-Mexico border.

They were there as part of a contingent from the U.S. Conference of Mayors to see a tent city for migrant children separated from their parents who crossed into the U.S. illegally along the southern border.

Ganim is an advisory member of the USCM.

He said the mission of the nearly two dozen officials on the trip was to help facilitate change.

Ganim said many of the young people crossing the border remind him of youngsters living in his city.

A request by the mayors to tour a detention area was rebuffed by the Department of Health and Human Services.
