(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - The state Department of Public Health is reporting additional human cases of West Nile virus.

DPH has logged five new cases bringing to 15, the number recorded so far this season.

Three of the cases are from Fairfield County: Norwalk, Danbury, and Stamford.  A fourth patient is from Thompson and the fifth from Westbrook.

Age ranges for the latest to be infected are between 40-and-70 years.

Three of the five sickened required hospitalization, according to DPH.  All became ill in early-to-mid-September.

Dr. Ted Andreadis, director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment station in New Haven, says although mosquito populations are on the decline, they're likely to see infected mosquitoes until the first hard freeze in October.

Residents are urged to continue to take precautions when out at dawn or dusk, when disease-carrying mosquitoes are most prevalent.
