(WTIC-AM) -- Yale University today announced one of the largest donations in its 3-century history.

Oil and pipeline businessman Edward Bass is donating $160-million to help fund the renovation of Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History.

The New Haven institution is adding about 50 percent more gallery space, and looking to update its exhibits.

Peabody officials say it is important to keep up with the changing pace of science's understanding of the world.

Yale officials say displays from the well-known Great Hall of Dinosaurs and the Hall of Mammalian Evolution will be prominent in the renovated structure.

They will be remounted in poses that tell stories about feeding or hunting.

There will also be more space for faculty and student research involving the museums's collections.

Bass is a member of Yale's class of 1967.  Forbes says he has a net worth of more than $2-billion.
