(Waterbury, Conn./WTIC) - Waterbury police say a 6-year old girl was killed Sunday night and a 29-year-old woman seriously injured when they were struck by a vehicle on Baldwin Street.

It was around 9:30 p.m. that officers say a van driven by 39-year-old Luis Loja rear-ended a vehicle which, in turn, pushed a third vehicle into the victims.  Loja attempted to leave the scene on foot but was convinced by witnesses to return.

Police later determined Loja had been driving under the influence.

He faces numerous charges including manslaughter and operating under the influence.  Bond was set at $750,000.

A third person who was thrown to the sidewalk in the incident sustained non life-threatening injuries.
