(Groton, Conn./WTIC Radio) - The Stonington High School senior prom came to an abrupt end Saturday night when someone sprayed an irritant similar to pepper spray into the air. Groton Town Police Sgt. David Miner said police received complaints of students having difficulty breathing after the airborne substance filled the air of the Mystic Marriott Hotal and Spa Ballroom, as prom-goers were dancing.

No lasting effects are expected, but two people were transported from the scene by ambulance.

The hotel's parking lot quickly filled with teens in gowns and tuxedos, some with bottles of water and others sipping from cups, as police cruisers and firetrucks came onto the scene. At about 10:30 p.m., adults with plastic bags were allowed back into the ballroom to collect personal items, such as phones and shoes, that students left behind. As of 10:40 p.m. Groton Police said they did not yet have a suspect, but were continuing to investigate.
