PLAINVILLE, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Police say the pilot of a small plane that crashed in Plainville Thursday morning was killed on impact.

The Rutan Defiant went down near Robertson Airport around 10:45 a.m., said the FAA. The pilot was the only person aboard, said the agency. There was no word on the pilot's identity.

"I looked out a window and I saw the plane coming straight toward the house here," a witness told WTIC News. "All of a sudden, he just turned left cause I figure he thought he was going to hit the house and then he went right on the other side of these trees and crashed on top of the hill."

The plane is listed an experimental, amateur-built aircraft, according to the FAA.

The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause for the accident, said officials.
