(WTIC-AM) -- The death of an off-duty South Windsor Police Sergeant has been ruled a homicide.

The Georgetown County, South Carolina coroner' office found that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Matthew Mainieri was at a bar in South Carolina over the weekend when police say he went to break up a fight, and fatally wounded.

Court documents filed by law enforcement officials say Mainieri was repeatedly hit in the head by a local man, and that Mainieri suffered internal injuries.
South Carolina resident Kelton Todd has been charged with assault, and released from custody on bond.

Police have said additional charges against the 21-year-old man are possible.
