(Fairfield, Conn./WTIC) - The former chief financial officer for the town of Fairfield has been arrested in connection with an early morning theft earlier this month in town offices.

Police say 76-year-old Robert Mayer is charged.

According to investigators, Mayer was fired January 15.

The next day in the wee hours, police say Mayer allegedly entered Sullivan Independence Hall and took several folders pertaining to an ongoing investigation into illegal dumping.

Mayer faces charges of burglary, larceny and tampering with evidence.

He's free on $10,000 bond and is due in court on Monday.
