Hartford, Conn. (WTIC) - The Hartford and New Haven Police Departments held a Gun Buy Back program Saturday where individuals could exchange guns for stop and shop gift cards.

The Buy Back program, held at the Community Renewal Team, strives to make communities safer by taking dangerous weapons off the street.  The event ended mid-afternoon and the final tally was record setting, as 137 firearms were turned in.  This more than doubled last year's total.

The safety teams on hand gave out gun locks and provided education on gun safety information.  The Police Departments and Community Renewal Team was encouraged by the Buy Back event to help make Connecticut communities safer.

The final tally on the firearms exchanged:

46 Revolvers

43 Pistols

4 Assault Rifles

25 Shotguns

19 Rifles

Additionally, over the past 10 years of doing Gun Buy Back events, including Saturday, nearly 1,400 unwanted firearms have been turned in.
