MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - State police, early Monday, had already issued more speeding tickets over the Memorial Day weekend than they had for the entire weekend a year ago.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, troopers had issued 725 speeding tickets, compared to 607 during the entire holiday period in 2019. Police around the state have reported an uptick in speeding with reduced traffic levels in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since Thursday morning, troopers had also charged 27 people with driving under the influence, cited 31 people for not wearing a seat belt, and issued 1,524 citations for other hazardous moving violations.

Troopers have investigated 147 crashes, including one involving serious injuries in the town of Brooklyn.

Stepped-up enforcement efforts run through Monday.
