(WTIC-AM) -- The state House today voted to require motorcycle riders and their passengers under the age of 21 to wear helmets.  The vote was 133 to 33 in favor of the helmet requirement.

Democratic Transportation Committee House Co-chair Roland Lemar says the bill will prevent traumatic brain injuries.

"There is a disproportionate number of highway deaths related to motorcycle users not wearing a helmet than the numbers would otherwise suggest," Lemar said.

But Wolcott Republican Representative Gale Mastrofrancesco says once people reach the age of 18, they are adults.

"We certainly want everyone to wear a helmet to protect themselves, but in my opinion it is their choice, not the choice of the state to tell them what to do," Mastrofrancesco said.

The bill has yet to go before the state Senate.
