(WTIC-AM) -- Information technology outsourcing firm Infosys today opened a new office at Goodwin Square in downtown Hartford.

The Indian-based company plans to add a thousand employees in Connecticut over the next several years, as part of a larger hiring spree across the US.

That represents a change for the company, which has long employed most of its engineers in India, where the pay and other costs are lower.

Infosys President Ravi Kumar says digital operations must now be closer to clients.

"All large corporations across the world are going through this journey of digital transformation," Kumar said. "We do believe digital skills will drive transformation of large corporations paranoid about new players."

Infosys is also forming an educational partnership with Trinity College.

The state lured Infosys with up to $12-million in grants, plus $2-million for training.
