(WTIC-AM) -- A new, more serious criminal charge of involuntary manslaughter has been filed against a man accused of causing the death of South Windsor Police Sergeant Matthew Mainieri.

Kelton Todd is in custody at the Georgetown, South Carolina County Detention Center.

Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Jason Lesley says the 21-year-old man was already facing a criminal charge.

"Todd was charged with assault of a high and aggravated nature, for allegedly striking Mainieri with a fist," Lesley said. "The assault charge will remain in place, according to the Georgetown Country Sheriff's office."

A bond hearing is expected to be held tomorrow.

Mainieri was off-duty when he was killed by blows to the head, while trying to break up a fight at a bar in South Carolina.
