Meriden Man Arrested, Charged In Fatal Bicyclist Accident

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) -- Police arrested a Meriden resident in connection with a fatal crash involving a bicyclist Saturday afternoon.

Officials say 35-year-old Derek C. Fries struck and killed 37-year-old Milford resident, Donald A. Carrelli with his car in the accident that took place at the intersection of South Turnpike Road at Toelles Road around 3:00 p.m.

Police say Fries veered off course, crossing over into the northbound lane along the highway and struck Carrelli, who was one of two bicyclists in the vicinity.

Carrelli was taken to Yale - New Haven Hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Fries was charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper line, illegal possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

He was released after posting bond and has a scheduled court appearance next month.
