EASTFORD, Conn. (WTIC RADIO) - A Putnam man died from a car accident on Saturday, August 31, which Connecticut State Police say is the only fatality of over 300 accidents they responded to over Labor Day weekend, as of Monday morning.

State police say 43-year-old Damon Frechette died when he struck a utility pole while heading eastbound on Boston Turnpike in Eastford.

Frechette was transported to Day Kimball Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say Frechette was navigating a sharp, uphill, leftward curve in the road when he lost control of the vehicle, a Ford Fusion S.

Officials say he ran off the road onto the right shoulder where he struck and damaged the utility pole.

From midnight Friday, August 30 to Monday morning, September 2, Connecticut State Police report they responded to 363 accidents and made 43 DUI arrests.

Police also issued several citations including 447 tickets for speeding, 29 for seat-belts and 26 for distracted driving.

State police say they had 5,709 calls for service during the holiday weekend.
