HAMDEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - An elderly Hamden woman is recovering, after police say she was attacked by a raccoon Monday.

Police and animal control officers were called to a home on vantage road around 4 p.m., by a woman who reported that a raccoon attacked her 84-year-old mother, who'd been gardening, according to police.

The animal bit the woman's hand before the victim's daughter stepped in to prevent further injuries.

The victim was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital.

The raccoon took off. It's unclear if it was rabid.

Hamden officials are urging residents not to feed raccoons, keep garbage out of reach, don't leave pet food outside and keep compost secure.
