(WTIC-AM) -- A late afternoon fire in a recycling plant in Willimantic is now  under control.

Windham Town Manager Jim Rivers says flames burned a Quonset hut with a work area and nearby junk cars at Northeast Recyclers on Route 66.

"The visibility of this was many miles, it was quite a plume of black smoke initially," Rivers said.

No injuries were reported.

People were evacuated from a neighborhood with many multifamily houses near the plant to the south of the fire.  The smoke was blowing in that direction.

Residents were expected to be allowed to return home tonight.

The fire was called in shortly after 3:30 pm today.

Firefighters from several nearby departments were called out to help.
