SCSU Student Dies Following Gymnastics Accident

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The campus of Southern Connecticut State University is in mourning, following the death of a student who was injured during gymnastics training on Friday.

Melanie Coleman, 20, of Milford, a junior at Southern, succumbed to her injuries Sunday evening, the school confirmed to WTIC News.

Coleman was a student athlete majoring in nursing. She was a graduate of Jonathan Law High School in Milford.

“Her coaches and professors describe Melanie as a special young woman, who excelled both in the classroom and in the gym,” said President Joe Bertolino. “Our deepest sympathies are extended to her family and friends on this tragic loss.”

SCSU is offering counseling services to students.
