MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - State police have tallied the numbers from four days of stepped-up traffic enforcement over the Labor Day weekend.

From Friday morning through Monday night, troopers responded to 7,000 calls for service, helped almost 300 motorists, handed out nearly 700 speeding tickets and made 46 arrests for operating under the influence, according to numbers released Tuesday.

Troopers issued more than 2,200 tickets for hazardous moving violations, such as unsafe lane changes, tailgating, and failing to move over for emergency vehicles.

State police also investigated 424 crashes. Fifty-one of them involved injury. One involved a fatality. Troopers say 43-year-old Damon Frechette of Putnam was killed in a one-car crash Saturday night on Route 244 in Eastford.
