FARMINGTON, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A teenager from Waterbury was pronounced dead after going under the water in the Farmington River Sunday afternoon.

Farmington police say the 19-year-old man was swimming with friends in the river behind Tunxis Meade Park when he went under around 20 feet from the river's bank and failed to resurface.

Members of the State Police Dive Team recovered the man's body roughly three hours later in approximately 20-foot deep water.

Police are urging all swimmers in the Farmington River to use life jackets or other flotation devices, as the water is still quite cold this time of year and can quickly incapacitate even experienced swimmers.
