(WTIC-AM) -- The UConn Torrington campus is being sold to a local arts group.

Five Points gallery plans to open an arts education center on the property.

After UConn trustees approved the sale today, university spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said UConn has many great memories of the campus.

"It is bittersweet," said Reitz. "The UConn community still considers Torrington as much a part of UConn as any other place in the state.  In a perfect world, we would love to have campuses elsewhere, but the reality is it just does not support that in terms of enrollment."

The Torrington campus has been closed since 2016.

UConn says it will use the $375-thousand generated by the sale to fund scholarships for students from the Torrington area.
