NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut's Corrections Department is conducting an internal investigation after an inmate who was restrained became unresponsive and died at a hospital.

A lieutenant at the New Haven Correctional Center has been placed on administrative leave.

The corrections department says staff members were able to restrain the inmate in the jail's medical center after the inmate refused to leave the shower area on Thursday. Officials say the inmate soon became unresponsive and officers performed lifesaving measures.

The inmate was taken to a hospital and died about three hours after the initial incident in the shower.

The names of the inmate and the officer have not been released.
