ESSEX, Conn. (WTIC) - State sales tax on boats, trailers, and motors dropped from 6.35% to 2.99% at the start of the month, and advocates believe it will make Connecticut more competitive in terms of sales, compared to neighboring states.

Kathleen Burns, the head of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association, says the tax break helps Connecticut compete with other states.

"Our neighbors to the east to have a zero percent tax on boats, and neighbors to the west have sales tax caps in New York and New Jersey," she explained. "The reality was Connecticut was the least competitive on the east coast, having the highest sales tax rate without a cap from Maine to Florida."

Burns says getting the tax cut approved in the state capitol was a three year process.
