WASHINGTON, DC (WTIC) - U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal says the country is in "a Watergate moment" following the guilty plea to campaign finance charges by President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen and the guilty verdict for eight charges against Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

Speaking to CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Blumenthal called for bipartisanship and implored his Congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come together to protect Robert Mueller's investigation, as well as defend against potential misuse of the Presidential pardon.

"I will tell you, we are going to see a firestorm of Presidential attempted interference in this investigation," Blumenthal said. "We need to enlist Republican colleagues to stand up and speak out."

On Tuesday, Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in connection with payments, made at Trump's direction, during the 2016 presidential campaign to two women who admitted they had affairs with Trump.

Manafort was found guilty, also on Tuesday, of eight financial crimes. The judge declared a mistrial on 10 other counts the jury could not agree on.
