STONINGTON, Conn. (WTIC) - A coastal community in Connecticut is looking into a ban on plastic bags and straws.

The Board of Selectmen in the town of Stonington has given the go ahead to form a committee to explore the issue. First Selectman Rob Simmons says he was struck by something he read earlier this summer.

"National Geographic came out with an incredible story about the proliferation of plastic that's going into the ocean," he said. "18 billion pounds of plastic ends up in the ocean each year... that's an awful lot of stuff."

Simmons says the committee will have 90 days to report to the board once it is formed, and will also come up with enforcement options should the ordinance be enacted.
